                              Women empowerment

A cause for growing number of divorce

Women empowerment is a subject which is in prime focus in the contemporary world. Be it social or political scenario, it is greatly emphasized upon. If we go by the literal meaning of it then we can say that Women empowerment is a social responsibility that the governments all over the world have, to work towards making women who are discriminated and treated inferior to men, to be treated equally by providing them jobs , training them in different fields of work , making them skilled human resource and giving them equal power in voicing their opinions for/against the functioning/policies of the state, which will all eventually make them self-sufficient and independent individuals so that they need not live as second class citizens  and slaves to men and victims to patriarchal guidelines.

But is is reality in actual life? This question is debatable upto a certain extent. More or less the objective of women empowerment as suggested by its dictionary meaning is jubilant and bebeficial for the larger women fraternity. But at the same time, as every coin has another side, so do this very special empowerment scheme have.  Life is full of positivities and negativities. We tend to look towards the brighter side only and ignore the dark harsh realities which are associated with things. So is happening in case of empowering women.

No doubt that empowering the women tends to place women at a more respected place in the society, thus providing her with respect equal to that of men, but at the same time , from its drawbacks, the one with the major cause of concern is the growing number of divorce in our country.

There are many reasons, for which a married couple seeks divorce, and to some extent it feels absurd to justify women empowerment as a reason for divorce, but that is the harsh reality. Normally people may have never thought that this could be a reason of divorce too, but under present circumstances and the reasons mentioned herein, we might conclude that women empowerment may be accounted as a significant cause of increasing divorce.

We live in India, and speaking a little orthodoxically, divorce is not our thing of liking. Our orthodox society never permit nor encourage someone to take divorce. Especially when a divorce happens, it is the women who has to suffer always. Men hardly lose anything, except for the alimony amount. The divorced woman is looked down upon by the society, everyone blames her to be the cause of divorce, even if she is not the guilty one.

But with women empowerment, there have been seen a tremendous boom in the divorce scenario in our country. The question that comes out here is how? The answer is even simpler. With women being empowered, more women have come out of the closet and walk with shoulder to shoulder with men. They are no more dependent upon men for fulfilling their basic needs. They work on their own and are very capable of satisfying their basic day to day needs, for which they were dependent on the men earlier. They no longer bear the atrocities afflicted upon them by the man. Earlier women were treated like slaves. They have to stay inside the house,  do the household chores and even after that they didn’t receive any respect.

Empowering women have totally changed the scenario. They are no longer slaves to men. Moreover the influence of western culture have also contributed a large extent to the divorce scenario. People in western countries doesn’t take divorce as a thing to look down upon. They accept it and move on in their life. This particular characteristics have inflicted the minds of Indian. Females here have accepted the western notion that there is no harm in taking a divorce. A small family quarrel , which could have been solved over a cup of tea, nowadays lead to divorce. The reason is simple, women is empowered, why she needs to listen to a man, she could be on her own very well. This particular idea leads to divorce.

Divorce is a very serious issue and many lives are ruined by it. Specially in a country like India, where a major fraction of the people are orthodox minded, divorce creates a deep impact upon the social life of the people involved. Divorced people are looked down upon as criminals. They don’t get a respectful position in the society. Women empowerment have been introduced for benefitting the people, and not for harming someone’s life. Better take it in a positive way. Though numerous many reasons leads to divorce, some of which are very serious and grim, but let’s not make a positive thing such as women empowerment to be the cause of divorce. For this, proper understanding from both the man and women side is needed.
